PART 2: “THE VIDEO MY SISTER RECORDED BEFORE SHE DIED… SHOWED MY HUSBAND ENTERING A HOTEL ROOM WITH SOMEONE I NEVER EXPECTED.”
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped the phone.
The screen flickered once.
Then the video began.
At first, all I saw was darkness and heard Claire breathing heavily, like she had been running. Then the camera shifted slightly, revealing a hotel hallway.
A timestamp glowed in the corner.
Three nights before my wedding.
My stomach tightened.
“Claire…” Megan whispered beside me.
The camera zoomed toward a hotel room door.
Room 814.
And then I saw him.
Ryan.
My husband.
Still wearing the silver watch I had bought him as a wedding gift.
He stood outside the room glancing nervously over his shoulder before using a keycard to enter.
My pulse stopped.
I couldn’t breathe.
But then someone else appeared behind him.
A woman.
Blonde hair.
Tall.
Elegant.
For one insane second, I thought he was cheating on me.
That would have hurt enough.
But then the woman stepped closer to the hallway light—
and I recognized her.
My mother.
The phone nearly slipped from my hands.
“No…” I whispered.
Megan covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.”
The video continued.
My mother touched Ryan’s arm intimately.
Not like family.
Not like comfort.
Like familiarity.
Like history.
Then they disappeared together inside the hotel room.
The recording ended abruptly.
Silence swallowed the office.
I stared at the frozen screen, unable to process what I had just seen.
My mother.
Ryan.
Hotel room.
Three days before our wedding.
I felt physically sick.
“There’s more,” Megan said softly.
She reached into Claire’s desk drawer and pulled out a thick envelope.
“She told me if anything happened to her… I had to give you everything.”
Everything.
That word suddenly terrified me.
Inside the envelope were printed screenshots.
Bank transfers.
Call logs.
Photos.
One picture showed Ryan kissing my mother outside a restaurant parking garage.
Another showed them entering the same hotel from the video.
The dates stretched back months.
Maybe longer.
I couldn’t feel my hands anymore.
“This has to be fake,” I whispered weakly.
But deep down…
I already knew it wasn’t.
Because suddenly Claire’s behavior made sense.
Why she hated Ryan.
Why she begged me to cancel the wedding.
Why she looked at my mother strangely during dress fittings.
Why she kept trying to talk to me alone.
She wasn’t jealous.
She was terrified.
And I never listened.
—
Then Megan handed me the final thing inside the envelope.
A voice recorder.
“There’s one audio file,” she said.
“I never listened to it.”
My throat tightened.
I pressed play.
Static crackled for a moment.
Then Claire’s voice filled the office.
“If you’re hearing this, Alice… something went wrong.”
I stopped breathing.
Her voice sounded shaky.
Scared.
“I didn’t know who else to trust anymore.”
A car door slammed somewhere in the background.
Then Claire continued:
“I followed Mom because I thought she was hiding something about Dad’s estate.”
Dad.
My father had died two years earlier from what everyone believed was a sudden heart attack.
“But it wasn’t just about money,” Claire whispered.
My pulse thundered.
